Why Do Cat Mark?

Filed under: Cat Urine — Tags: — kitenunggu @ 9:56 am

Why do cats mark?

What is urine marking?

Urine marking or spraying  is when your cat deposits little amounts of pee (usually on vertical surfaces) as a kind of message tag to declare his attendance.

Why do cats mark?

There are a number of reasons why cats mark:

- Territoriality: the cat is letting out other cats understand that the marked area is “his or her” territory.
- To show sexual availability
- Out of stress or nervousness
- A change of place: some cats will begin to mark when their owners move house.
- If a new pet or human is introduced to the residence.
- Because of too many other cats in the house.
- The cat is getting less care than usual.
- A significant change in a manner of living or routine (for example, the owner gets a full-time job; someone moves out of home; the house is renovated).

You should make it really easy for your cat to urinate appropriately by prepare enough litter boxes in the house.

It should be at least one more than the total number of cats.
If you have two storey house, make sure there is at least one box per storey, and see that they are all cleaned regularly.

How to Stop Your Cats From Marking?

There are a number of steps that you can take to reduce, or stop entirely, your cat’s marking.
There are some of the most effective options as the list below:

1. Take your cat to the vet for a urinalysis (a complete analysis of his urine) and an overall  checkup, to make sure that there are no medical reasons for his behavior.

2. Neuter your cat immediately. This is the single most effective thing you can do to stop your cat’s spraying, and if you hope to get any control at all over the issue, it is pretty much mandatory.

Statistics show that a whopping 87% of all cats stopped marking when they are altered - of this number, 78% cease marking immediately, and 9% stop within three months.

3. Behavioral modification
Behavior modification is a tried and true method of controlling your cat’s spraying, although it will require a considerable investment of time and effort on your behalf. You will need to supervise your cat closely, paying attention to where and when he marks.

4. “Re designating” the areas which he tends to mark in can also help: cats do not like to spray in areas where they eat, sleep, and play. If he marks in particular places around the home indiscriminately, put his food bowls next to the spot, play with him there, and put his bed there.

To deal with your cat’s behavior problems and changing her behavior for the better, Cat Training comes very highly recommended.

What do you do when a black cat crosses your path? Do you get nervous? Do you at least immediately think of bad luck and superstition? You aren't alone. Since the Middle Ages our furry little feline friends have been on a downward slope. The rise of the witch as a target for religious fanatics to blame for all the natural “evils” that the flesh is heir to launched a transformation of the domestic cat from an animal previously considered sacred to an animal upon which all the iniquities of the world was invested. Human beings confused with being witches weren't the only victims of the Middle Age spread of fear and superstition. In fact, many villages launched Pied Piper-like crusades to completely annihilate the feline population. The reason was that witches were believed capable of turning themselves into cats to better prowl around unnoticed. The term for a witch's cat was “familiar” and the idea stemmed from the belief that the favorite form that Satan could take was a cat. (Take a gander at Roger Corman's The Undead-either the original version or the MST3K version-for a general idea of how this anthropomorphism might have worked. The result was an almost instantaneous 180 turn for cats. Suddenly these creatures were the object of suspicion that often grew into full-blown paranoia. Let's put it this way: most witches weren't alone when they were burned at the stake in Europe.

It wasn't always this way. For a long time the cat was far from an object of scorn, fear and contempt. The ascendancy of the feline began in ancient Egypt, where cats were not just adored but deified. In fact, the Egyptians actually had laws against killing or even injuring a cat. More than that, when a cat did pass on into the afterlife it was an event of profound emotion. Ancient Egyptian families, regardless of whether they belonged to the nobility or the lower class, engaged in elaborate mourning ceremonies following the death of a cat that went so far as to embalm the corpse of the cat and wrap it in expensive cloth and linen before placing it inside equally intricate bronze cases.

The Egyptians weren't alone in holding cats in the high esteem, though they may have taken it the farthest. The civilizations of the Orient were equally fond of felines. The legendary Chinese philosopher Confucius is said to have treated his pet cat inordinately well, and Sanskrit texts reveal that cats held a prominent place in ancient Indian society. Meanwhile, the Japanese used cats as a kind of security system, using them to watch over copies of their most sacred texts. Even the Romans got in on the act; they used cats as a symbol of liberty. This idea doubtlessly has its basis in the fact that the cat is far less easy to tame and control than other domestic animals.

Speaking of domesticity, house cats are not actually descended from wild tigers and lions. There is enough genetic similarity to compare the relationship between your pet and that big stripy beauty at the zoo to the one between you and the apes in the habitat across from the tiger. If you go back in time far enough-between 30 and 40 million years ago-both the big cats and little tabby shared a common relation, but around that point evolution pointed them in different directions. Even though your little purring machine exhibits many of the same behaviors and anatomical features as the jungle cats, they actually as different as humans and apes.

Of course, sometimes it is difficult to determine that any different exists at all, whether it's your pet stalking a bird in the back yard or an apelike man leading a country.

Cat Organic Food

The definition of a feral cat is basically a wild cat. It has usually never been touched by human hands, is born in the wild, and hunts small prey to survive. Small prey includes birds, lizards, mice, rats and baby rabbits. Any animal small enough that doesn't stand much of a fighting chance the cat will kill. If the cat lives by a creek or stream it will kill fish, although cats don't like to get wet, water won't stop them when it comes to a kill.

Feral cats roam about in packs, but you will still find a feral cat roaming on its own. People tend to think a pet cat living outdoors is not considered a feral cat. They feed it and pet it so how is it feral? Any cat outdoors no matter how tame it seems to be is still wild. The cat will not stay in your backyard. It will breed with other feral cats and expand the cat population. It will hunt for sport no matter how much you feed it.

Cats in general are vicious predators. They have razor sharp claws and teeth. They are also becoming a huge problem few people want to acknowledge. They are wiping out the songbird population. The horny toad once a thriving species is endangered. This is due partly because of man and partly due to cats. Cats hunt lizards while man uses pesticides. Though the horny toad may one day be told as a myth allusive as the dinosaur, songbirds don't have to be.

The great state of Wisconsin has an estimated two million feral cats alone. Each year they kill an estimated forty seven million to one hundred thirty nine million birds. Residents of Madison Wisconsin tried to get a law passed that would allow a person to be able to shoot feral cats as long as they had a small game permit. Cat lovers turned up and protested. The bill was turned down.

Feral cats have been caught spayed or neutered and then released. This is a bad solution to the explosion of feral cats. One cat has the ability to produce Four Litters a year and each litter consists of Four to Six kittens. One feral cat who has escaped being spayed or neutered could literally produce thousands of feral cats with the help of its offspring.

Since cats have very few predators, except the occasional dog,  they are wreaking havoc in every available and unavailable area. Hunting feral cats might seem cruel, but it's no different then hunting deer. They are hunted and killed every year while they pose no threat to other species.

While overpopulation of feral cats threaten a multitude of problems for other species; they play host to a multitude of diseases. Have you ever been warned about a cat scratch? Feral cats are carriers of rabies. If you've been scratched by a stray you may not know you have rabies until you start to show signs of the deadly disease and by then its too late.

If scratched by a stray you should immediately go to the doctor for a series of painful shots in the stomach as a preventative measure for rabies. Another disease feral cat's carry is salmonella. Salmonella is a food borne illness that has the ability to produce Typhoid Fever and Paratyphoid Fever, but one disease caused by a parasite cat's carry is already making the news.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma Gondii parasites. Any animal could be infected, but the main carrier is the cat. Millions of the parasite eggs are shed in cat feces and can live in the ground for a year. If you accidentally touch any cat feces wash your hands immediately.

This will prevent you from getting the parasites, but keep in mind that walking barefoot in your yard might lead to contracting the parasite. Another place to watch out for is any handling of feces removal from the litter box. You may think that your pet housecat doesn't have Toxoplasma Gondii parasites, but more then likely it does if it's allowed outside.

Toxoplasmosis is now linked to Schizophrenia because the parasites have been found in the brain. Hunting feral cats should be legalized in order to control them and protect the wildlife they now threaten and to help control the spreading of diseases they carry. Cat owners should be held responsible for their cat and be made to cough up a heavy fine should their cat kill or hurt any bird, lizard, rabbit, etc. Feral cats should be caught and not released back into the cat population. We need to do what's right for all species to survive and not allow one species to predate upon another until it is gone.

Cat Organic Food

The typical house cat is a fascinating animal. If you are researching for information about your cat or doing a report on felines, here are some little known quick facts of interest to round out your project.

1. The typical house cat sleeps about 16 hours per day. The word 'catnapping' obviously comes from this statistic. A cat's brain stays aware of sounds and danger during sleep.

2. No need to offer a cat sugar, most are unable to digest it. They also have no taste buds that can taste the sensation of sweet, a trait that you or I might sometimes wish for!

3. Typical house cats' backbones are connected by muscle, not ligaments like humans. This makes cats superior in flexibility. When a cat stretches, he is really toning muscle comparative to humans performing isometric exercises.

4. When it comes to anatomy, cat's have us outnumbered. They have nineteen million nerve endings for smelling compared to our six million. Their outer ear contains thirty muscles and ours a mere six! You may already know that the typical house cat has more bones in it's body than a person, but did you know that its nosepad is similar to a fingerprint? It can be used for identification purposes. Hard to picture putting Kitty's nose on an ink pad!

5. Contrary to popular opinion, catnip is not every cat's favorite. Loving the herb is genetic, with slightly more cats crazy about it than not. Kittens under 3 months are indifferent to catnip.

6. Typical house cats can hear very faint sounds and can detect their spot of origin within inches. They hear better than their canine friends and can see in the dark six to ten times better than us human friends!

7. Typical house cats' whiskers are important to their balance and if severed may cause them to walk a little sideways.

8. Cat's in the White House have included the administrations of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Coolidge, Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Bush.

9. Why do there seem to be so many Tabbys? Because there are! The common striped coat of the Tabby is caused by a dominant gene.

10. It is said that typical house cats always land on their feet, but it is not always true. Sometimes they fall like we do - clumsily! They are extremely coordinated physically and can usually land on their feet.

Cat Organic Food

Recently my wife 's and my cat developed a food allergy to the food he had been using for a long time. The food allergy caused symptoms such as itching and biting his own skin and chewing on his own tail due to the itchy rash the food was causing. To combat these food allergies, we switched our cat's food to Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin recipe cat food. The switch to the hypoallergenic Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food was effective in eliminating our cat's food allergy and subsequent skin irritation.

Blue Buffalo pet food is famous for using high quality human-food grade ingredients in its cat food. The sensitive skin recipe is specially designed to be hypoallergenic for your feline friend, reducing the chances of complications due to food allergies and skin irritations. Just as using all-natural ingredients in human food preparation can have positive skin benefits for humans, so too can all-natural ingredients be used in cat food to ensure that your pet cat has healthy skin that is free from allergic reactions.

The Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food has whole grains and real vegetables to promote healthy digestions. Our cat had also developed a habit of throwing up his food, which is another sign of a food allergy in cats. Since we began feeding Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food to our cat, our cat has stopped throwing up entirely and he is most satisfied with his new food blend without having to worry about throwing up his meal every other day.

In addition to whole grains, the Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food also has avocado oil and a collection of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids to promote healthy skin and a shiny coat of fur. In these respects the Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food does not fall short, as evidenced by our own cat's shinier coat and smoother, healthier-looking skin. Our cat had been licking certain spits such as his nipples and tail red and raw before the switch to Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food, but since the switch his raw patches have returned to normal and his reddened skin is back to its normal pink hue.

In conclusion, if your cat is suffering from symptoms of food allergy such as itching, biting, and scratching, it is possible that your cat has a food allergy to his current food. Even if your cat has been eating the same food for a long time, an allergy can still develop. Try switching your cat food to Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food, which is hypoallergenic and full of all the essential vitamins and nutrients your cat needs to function well. Do not neglect to take your cat to the veterinarian, since it is a good idea to rule out any other cause of your cat's symptoms than food allergy. But if the cause of your cat's symptoms is truly a food allergy, then a premium and all-natural cat food like Blue Buffalo Sensitive Skin cat food recipe may be just the answer your cat needs.

Cat Organic Food

Organix Feline formula made by Castor and Pollux seems to be a high quality cat food. I have become so disgusted with low quality pet food companies that I have begun to make my own pet food at home. Even so, I still like buying a commercial dry food to supplement with because it is so convenient. Organix feline formula is the result of searching for a better cat food. I found it at Whole Foods Market for $15.99 for a 6 lb. Bag. The bag is beige, black and orange. The logo says, “Castor & Pollux-Paw Made-We make stuff we like.” It is made with organic chicken, brown rice and flax.

On side of bag it reads:

“As part of your family, your cat deserves the very best food available. And with Organix feline formula with organic ingredients, we've gone the extra step above any other cat food. This unique product qualifies under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National organic program as made with organic ingredients, meaning at least 70% of the content is organic.”

All six of my cats love this food. I have one that is extremely picky, and he immediately started eating it as if it were the most delicious food in the world. I feel good about feeding this food to them, as I know it is nutritious. Suppliers for the meat and grain ingredients are required to be organic certified. Most of the cheaper suppliers used by many of the main pet food companies, would not be up to standard for Organix feline formula.

It says, “What does that mean to you and your cat? You can trust that the organic ingredients used in Organix meet or exceed strict state and federal regulations at every phase of production from the farm to the bowl. As part of the organic certification process, each and every ingredient in Organix is reviewed and approved for inclusion. Our manufacturing facility, the plant milling our organic grains, the poultry farm supplying our organic free-range chicken, the farmers growing our organic grains-all must be certified organic. This certification process is rigorous and demanding but is our commitment to you to provide a very special product for your favorite feline.”

The first ingredient in this food is organic chicken. No meat by-products like you will find in most pet foods. Compare to Meow Mix, where the first ingredient is corn. This food is a little more expensive, but definitely worth the price.

Side label goes on to say, “Our organic ingredients have no pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, growth hormones, bio-engineering, or by-products. The use of organic ingredients also enhances environmental quality because farmers and ranchers producing organic food use renewable resources and management techniques to help sustain our environment.”

I wholeheartedly recommend this food to everyone. Your cat will love it, and it will be healthy food to eat!
